Message From JLYSSL
The winter rains have finally arrived just in time for the ramp up of
the soccer year here in JLYSSL. We all want and need the rain in order
to grow the grass on our precious fields but sometimes it can amount to
too much at the wrong time. March brings the start of the tryouts for competitive
soccer in JLYSSL. Bay Oaks and our class I program and each of our member
clubs and their class III programs have tryouts on board soon. [See
the article below for more info on tryouts] But the recent rains could
be playing havoc with those schedules.

On
February [] JLYSSL hosted a great event for our U8 and U10 teams out at
Alameda Pt. 30 teams in the U8 and U10 age groups (both boys and girls)
representing MSC, OSC, RSC, PSC and Bay Oaks participated in a fun 7v7
Jamboree that got the kids out ont he soccer field after the winter layoff
and gave everyone a chance to play some fun games, share community, and
eat a free lunch meal.
Luis Barranco was the league organizer for this event that brought over
[] youth soccer players out to the Point. Teams brought their spirit, food
contributions, and smiles out for these games. The weather was full of
sunshine, the fields were dry due the mild winter we had till that weekend,
and the competition was friendly.

Gearing up for Training Camp - A Players Diary - Kim Yokers
As all the youth teams in my area are approaching tryout time, and parents
are looking for training options to prepare their players for tryouts,
I find it interesting to be in a similar position. I recently attended
three different tryouts for the new Women’s
Pro Soccer league, and have been invited in to join the team
in training camp for the Bay Area’s FC
Gold Pride. There are seven teams total in the new
league this year across the nation, with a few cities marked for expansion
next year. In training camp, 28 players will compete for a spot on
the 22-player roster (4 players of which will not be paid, but will train
with the Pride and play games with the Bay Area’s “farm” team – the
Storm).

As the plane touched down on the orange dirt path that was used as a runway
I was excited and ready to work with the people of Kigoma. Before leaving
for Africa I prepared the best I could; I read the lonely planet for Tanzania,
I learned a couple of phrases in Swahili, I watched some documentaries
on Africa etc… However for an American girl who has never traveled
outside of North America my efforts to be ready wasn’t enough to
prepare me for the emotion packed adventure I was about to take.
